The king of Bavaria married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on October 12th and invited all of his subjects to join him for a royal wedding celebration. The citizens were also invited to bring their own food and drinks which led to an impromptu festival that was held on October 17th.

This event became known as “Wiesn” which means “meadow”

Celebrations were resumed in 1850 after it was decided that there should be an annual event to commemorate King Maximilian II’
